The Glory Days vs. The Golden Years To Come

Remember “the glory days”?

The first date.
The first child.
The first marriage.
The first kiss.

We talk about those moments like they’re locked away in a scrapbook, only to be visited with nostalgic, sentimental longings and wistful affection. As if the best is behind us and all we can do now is remember.

But what if that’s not true?

What if the “glory days” were never meant to be a single season we leave behind, but a way of living we can choose again and again?

The fact is: there is not a lot we can control in life.
We can’t always control circumstances, other people’s choices, or what shows up on our doorstep.

But we can control:

  • Our Outlook
  • Our Character
  • Our Hunger for New
  • Our Commitment to Workflow

These ideas are inspired by Brendon Burchard’s book, The Charge: Activating the 10 Human Drives That Make You Feel Alive. And they line up beautifully with a life that keeps growing, deepening, and staying spiritually awake.

Let’s look at each one.

1. Outlook: How you choose to see your life

Outlook is the lens through which you see your past, your present, and your future.

You can look back on the “glory days” and say:

  • “Those were the best years of my life. Nothing will ever be that good again.”

Or you can say:

  • “Those were beautiful gifts, and God is not finished writing my story yet.”

Outlook doesn’t ignore pain, loss, or disappointment. It just refuses to hand them the microphone.

A hopeful outlook asks:

  • How might God still use me in this season?
  • What could be good about where I am right now?
  • Where might new joy, friendship, or purpose be waiting?

The glory days don’t disappear. They simply stop being the ceiling and start being the foundation.

2. Character: Who you are becoming

We cannot control everything that happens to us, but we can cooperate with what God is doing in us.

Character is the quiet, daily decision to:

  • Tell the truth
  • Keep your word
  • Show up with kindness
  • Take responsibility instead of blame
  • Choose integrity when no one is watching

These may not feel like “glorious” moments, but they are.

Every time you choose patience instead of bitterness…
Every time you forgive instead of replaying the hurt…
Every time you honor God when it would be easier to go your own way…

You are building a new kind of glory.
Not the flashy, surface kind, but the deep, golden years kind.

3. The Drive for New: Refusing to live on repeat

Another way we stay stuck in the “old glory days” is by silently agreeing that our story is finished.

“The big things already happened. I just coast now.”

But we were created for growth, curiosity, and newness.

The drive for new might look like:

  • Learning a new skill
  • Starting a fresh habit
  • Saying yes to a new friendship
  • Serving in a new way
  • Exploring a new project, ministry, or hobby

New doesn’t have to be dramatic. It just has to be intentional.

Ask yourself:

  • What is one new thing I can explore this month?
  • Where have I been on autopilot that needs fresh attention?
  • Is there a dream I buried because I thought I was “too old” or “too late”?

Your golden years are not about replaying old memories on a loop. They’re about letting God surprise you again.

4. Workflow: How you move through your days

We don’t usually put “workflow” and “glory days” in the same sentence, but maybe we should.

Workflow is simply:

  • The way you order your time
  • The way you prioritize what matters
  • The way you follow through on what you say is important

Glory doesn’t just happen in big moments. It is built into the ordinary rhythms of your life.

Ask:

  • Does my daily routine reflect what I say I value?
  • Is there space for prayer, reflection, and relationship?
  • Am I constantly reacting, or am I intentionally choosing?

Even small adjustments to your workflow can reopen the door to joy and meaning:

  • 10 quiet minutes with God before you touch your phone
  • A weekly walk with a friend instead of another hour of TV
  • One simple creative project you move forward each week

Structure doesn’t cage your life. Done well, it frees you to live it more fully.

Glory days, or golden years?

The old “glory days” were real, and they were good.
But they are not all there is.

Your golden years are not just about age or retirement. They are about a life that keeps shining because you keep choosing:

  • A hopeful Outlook
  • A grounded, growing Character
  • A curious drive for New
  • A meaningful, intentional Workflow

You may not control everything in your world.
But with God’s help, you can choose how you show up in it.

And every time you do, you are quietly creating new glory.

Maybe the best days are not behind you after all.
Maybe they are being written right now, one faithful choice at a time.
